Peckham-born alchemist Sam Akpro shares ‘Tunnel Vision’, a new single from his forthcoming debut album Evenfall out 28 March released on ANTI-, alongside announcing a headline London show in support of the album on 24 April at Moth Club. ‘Tunnel Vision’ marks a propulsive diversion from the towering, stately heights chartered by previous single ‘Evenfall’, it’s the sound of Akpro at full-focus: stomping, high-tempo drums, celestial breaks and a vocal from Akpro that faces down existential fatigue head on.
Sam Akpro shares the following:
“‘Tunnel Vision’ is the feeling of being exhausted from the outside world – it’s late at night and everything seems to go past me. I’m watching a series or whatever but I’m not absorbing a single thing. In short I’m indulging in mindless distractions.”
‘Tunnel Vision”s accompanying visual comes directed by Pedro Takahashi, who worked with Akpro previously on the MVA-nominated video for ‘Death By Entertainment’ and the stunning clip for ‘Evenfall.’
Evenfall‘s ten tracks craft an immersive sonic world, rich in mood and atmosphere, and featuring a multi-faceted backing band: Cameron Jacobs (guitar), Joshua Lee (guitar), Luke Chin-Joseph (bass), Kyle Creaton (drums) and Taylor Devenny (sampler, keys). Co-produced by Akpro and frequent collaborator Shrink, Evenfall pulls all genres into its orbit. From the post-punk-laced immediacy of ‘Death By Entertainment’ to the woozy swagger and shout-along choruses of ‘Chicago Town’, from the dub-infused stomp of ‘City Sleeps‘ to future pit-starter ‘Tunnel Vision’, this is music for a genreless future where ambiance is king. As influenced by Sonic Youth as it is by J Dilla, Evenfall is an arresting document of the friendships and communities forged while growing up skating the streets of London.
