Bad Mothers Union release ‘Cut In Half’, the second single from their upcoming album Sore Losers. The track takes an experimental bent as a result of the band taking their time to try different approaches in the studio. ‘Cut In Half’ features two bass guitars and lots of effects, creating an ambient piece of work that is perhaps an outlier within their catalogue.
Guitarist Conor Kavanagh shares:
“Lanigan (guitar) really led this one. He told Aaron (drums) to play that beat until further notice and then instructed us all to get weird with it. It definitely felt like a welcome return to our improvisational beginnings. The three guitars got so out there that it’s difficult to discern who’s actually playing what at times.
To me the song feels like us doing a nod to some of the more experimental early post punk bands that we enjoy. I always preferred Public Image Ltd. to Sex Pistols (not that it’s a competition or anything), and this captures the essence of some of their deep cuts I reckon.”
A whirling dervish of unbridled self-expression, Bad Mothers Union unleash torrents of euphoric psych-rock. Established in Kilkenny by frontman Conor Kavanagh, the band have focused on forging a community of like-minded individuals, bands and artists with the view that no crowd or venue is too small. The 5-piece are driven by the unshakeable need to share their artistic vision with the world. Eschewing the standard approach to membership, the band act as a musical collective, thriving on collaboration and what each player’s voice brings to their sonic tapestry. The current line-up is Conor Kavanagh (vocals/guitar), Céin O’Dowd (guitar), Shay English (bass), Ethan Corcoran (bass/vocals) and James O’Neill (drums/percussion). Drawing on influences both musical and beyond, the band cite Sonic Youth, Thee Oh Sees and the Velvet Underground along with a touch of David Lynch humour, adding a surrealist twist to the expansiveness of their music.
