Day Sleeper have released ‘Shorthand’ from their forthcoming second EP This House Won’t Fold set for release on 13 May. It sees the Leith, Edinburgh based band venture into previously unexplored, experimental folk-tinged territory. Angular, forlorn guitars and a skyline of dripping modular synthesisers evoke the likes of Wilco, Silver Jews or Yo La Tengo, as guest vocalist Annie Booth joins frontman Leo Bargery for an intimately confessional duet that builds to an explosion of distorted outpour.
Following on their debut EP Everything There Is via Assai Records in 2024, This House Won’t Fold promises to represent the evolution of Day Sleeper’s sound ushered in by a year of consistent live shows up and down the UK, with a spontaneous, high-intensity aesthetic and emotional core.
Edwin McLachlan (drums/production) shares the following:
“’Shorthand’ is one of the first songs, Leo, Ryan and I jammed it out in late 2022, as we were working on the first EP and before Day Sleeper had even formed. We shelved it for a year or so and eventually ended up naturally coming back to it, Ryan and I sat down and found a proper
arrangement that would properly carry the vocal and lyrics, and the rest just naturally unfurled from there. Annie’s vocal is so gorgeous, she really completed the song, I can’t imagine it without her, she adds so much to the narrative and the emotional arc of it all.”
