Today Newcastle’s Pit Pony release new single ‘The Present’, a warm and candid reflection on enduring female friendships. Exploring the ways people often drift apart and find their way back to one another, the track celebrates seeing old friends afresh, and the restorative power of shared memories and life-affirming moments.
On ‘The Present’, Pit Pony explore the enduring, ever changing nature of long lasting friendship. The closeness and distance, the words we regret, and the ways in which we move in and out of each other’s lives. Reflecting on friendships that survive disagreement, separation and new chapters, the track celebrates the chance to see one another afresh in every season. Warm, candid and life-affirming, ‘The Present’, captures how a shared memory or a night together can restore perspective and make anything feel possible again.
Lead singer Jackie Purver comments on the single:
“’The Present’ is about those friendships that last for years, even as our lives and the closeness between us change. Sometimes you drift apart, disagree or wish you’d said something differently; then, further down the line, you find your way back to one another. My female friendships have often moved through those different chapters, and the song is about learning to meet each other anew each time. A night with old friends can be completely life-affirming — it can make you feel ready to kick down doors and take on the world. Then a shared memory brings everything back into focus, and you remember to laugh about it all together.”
‘The Present’ follows July’s single ‘Thunder’ as Pit Pony’s first new music since 2025’s critically acclaimed second album Dead Stars. It sees the band explore a softer and more expansive soundscape and was recorded late last summer with Jackie seven months pregnant and the band wanting to capture the excitement and the energy of newly penned material before understandably taking a break for the new arrival.
Forming in Newcastle in 2017, identity and life experiences have formed the backbone of Pit Pony’s sound. Over the years they’ve played live extensively with the likes of IDLES, PigsX7 and The Futureheads alongside standout festival performances. Continuously, they remain loyal to their roots sonically nodding towards regional titans such as the aforementioned ‘Heads’ and Nadine Shah with Jackie Purver always staying true to her accent.
Mastering engineer Katie Tavini (Bloc Party, Nadine Shah & Arlo Parks) proves the perfect fit with Chris McManus (Blank Studios) heading up recording & production on The Present.
