Today, Edinburgh electronic-indie group redolent share new single, ‘funner’, the follow-up to recent comeback track ‘ok wow’. Where ‘ok wow’ sat with the discomfort of an argument’s aftermath, ‘funner’ moves in the opposite direction: a warm, upbeat electronic track built around a genuine moment of happiness on tour, an ice cream sandwich and a sunset standing in for what the band describe as the opposite of a panic attack.
Speaking on the track, the band share:
“It’s funny looking back on ‘funner’, it’s a bit of an attempt at a pop song for a major label. It takes me back to that time. I remember sitting on Andy’s car in Texas with an ice cream sandwich watching a sunset and having what felt like the opposite of a panic attack. I like its place on the album as a kind of goofy, disarming, not-that-deep break from a lot of the more intense, darker stuff on there.”
The accompanying music video sees frontman Robin Herbert dancing and singing through a Scottish field, with Alice Hancock playing an SP-404 alongside him. Lo-fi and low-key by design, the video’s mood matches the track itself: more electronic than acoustic, but noticeably lighter and more playful than its predecessor.
Redolent’s self-produced documentary, released alongside ‘ok wow’, charts the band’s journey from a 2021 GameStop short squeeze windfall through to a Columbia Records deal, its end, and the band’s Scottish Album of the Year win with dinny greet in 2024.
