Edinburgh based National Playboys release new single ‘Drowning’, a personal story about the deterioration of a loved one’s mental health and feeling unable to help. Watching someone decline under the weight of their worsening condition and feeling powerless to halt it is the inspiration behind this track. Lyrically ‘Drowning’ looks to explore the helplessness of the situation and to highlight the pain it inflicts, not only to the sufferer but also to their loved ones:
“I want to crawl into your skin, to feel something again… there’s nothing I can do… goodbye.”
‘Drowning’ leans into Post-Punk and Darkwave instrumentation, with an ode to 1980s artists within those genres. The addition of the cello alongwith the backing vocal delivery puts a modern spin on the track. The band hopes that the lyrical content of the track connects, especially at this time when mental health awareness is so important.
‘Drowning’ was recorded at Pocketsounds Studio in Edinburgh, produced/ mixed by Ed Meltzer and mastered by Pete Maher. Nationla Playboys was working towards releaseing their debut EP before the end of 2026. Sonically, the band blends 80s new wave inspired vocals, with moody guitars, surrealistic poetry and memorable theatrical live performances. Sharing influences with artists such as Fat White Family, The Doors, Fontaines D.C, Idles and Joy Division.
