‘Horsepower is God’ is the new single from Manchester’s electro-punk trio YAANG. A blistering seven minute epic, the track is the first new music from the band since last year’s debut EP No and arrives alongside news of an October headline tour, taking in London’s Old Blue Last on 29 October and Manchester’s YES Pink Room on 30 October. The track was mastered by DFA 1979’s Jesse F. Keeler.
Produced by Al Groves (Bring Me The Horizon, Cast), the song was originally conceived as a new closer for the band’s live show but quickly evolved into an exploration of masculinity and the pressures of traditional male identity. Drawing on the language and archetypes of a culture that continues to promote rigid ideas of what it means to “be a man”, ‘Horsepower is God’ offers a cathartic release for anyone struggling with gender identity or the weight of those expectations, as frontman Davey Moore explains;
“I started watching shows with traditionally masculine characters and logging little lines. Using them as a base to explore what ‘masculinity’ even means. It ended up being an emotional song that I hope can help people vent their frustrations as they sing it.”
