Pink Eye Club, the moniker of Streatham based gardener and “One-man Disco Machine” (Loud & Quiet) Haydn Davies, has been a certified icon of the south London grassroots for nearly a decade. And the list of acts he’s performed with at the iconic Brixton Windmill over the years reads like a Who’s Who of some of capital’s biggest indie breakthroughs: Little Grandad, Opus Kink, Fat White Family, Honeyglaze, Night Tapes, DEADLETTER, Tapir!, Folly Group, Y, and more. Captured numerous times by celebrated videographer Lou Smith, as a dedicated promoter and tireless backer of emerging talent, he’s also put on early shows of PVA and Lambrini Girls, as well the first ever live performances of Fat Dog and Joe Jazz (who later formed The Orchestra (for Now).
Uplifting, authentic, and startlingly honest, his music is powered by an undying love for the dancefloor and the chase for genuine human connection. Underneath pulsating sunny Ibiza house beats, brutally frank lyrics of late night introspection read like unfiltered inner monologues. Grief, fear, love, hate and gratitude are all yelled with triumphant catharsis. The emotions are raw, but the synths are always tripping, and the basslines are always pumping.
Taken from forthcoming album Emotional Dance Music due this October, new single ‘Small Talk’ epitomises Pink Eye Club’s distinct musical journey. In a smoke machine-filled haze of 80s synths, the track reflects on the kind of social anxieties of Haydn’s past, but delivered with the kind of glory and confidence that has helped him overcome them.
Speaking more about the track, Haydn says:
“Small Talk’ is the first song from my upcoming, autobiographical album Emotional Dance Music. It represents a time in my life when I used to connect with people on the dance floor rather than in conversation. These days things are different and my confidence has grown, but it’s a reflection of a time when I couldn’t just simply go up to a group of people and start a random conversation. I feel as though I’m not alone in this but music & dancing helps even the most introverted of people create genuine human connections. “
