Flying On The Ground is the new project from drummer/producer Archie Dewis and guitarist/vocalist Hani Paskin-Hussain. Their debut single ‘Goodbye, My Friend’ addresses the hardship and difficulties that the duo has felt and still very much feel. It’s a reflection of clinging to that teenage dream that slowly drifts with the onset of adulthood. Out now via Golden Lion Sounds.
You may recognise the duo from their previous outfit, The Lounge Society. The band had quite the rise, starting fast with extensive tour dates around the UK and Europe, alongside festival appearances in America and Japan. Their debut album (released on Speedy Wunderground / produced by Dan Carey) was met with great critical acclaim, leaving the teenage band with a feeling that things were really taking off.
However, as time passed, obstacles arose, personal matters alongside dealings of the music business left the band jaded, exhausted and up against a brick wall. With a blank calendar, they turned to The Golden Lion for solace, using the upstairs live room to practice and formulate new ideas. This time gave the members a new perspective, realising that differing musical directions was the right path. Archie took on a new recording studio, Mark It Zero Studios in Hebden Bridge. The studio houses an impressive collection of vintage analog equipment with an array of synthesizers. The duo used this studio as their new base, experimenting with the electronics on offer and fusing this with their guitar roots. Many hours have been spent in the studio with memories of the Golden Lion dancefloor lingering in their minds.
Tracks played by the likes of David Holmes, Daniel Avery and Ivan Smagghe all serve as inspiration for Flying On The Ground. The label seeks to continue its mission to release music from close friends of the venue. Flying On The Ground have now found their sound, with one eye on the past and the other firmly looking forward. It’s exciting to see what they do next.
