South East London post punk trio The Vouchers release their concept EP Minibreak, a cerebral exploration into the underbelly of a Britain trying to capture old glories yet also figuring out what it all means. The band share:

“There’s nostalgia here but the kind of nostalgia that misses the certainty of the simple pleasures of a warm ham sandwich and some shit crisps in a service station car park, rather than some bemusing health food concoction in a Shoreditch bijou cafe that costs £6.80 and aggravates the IBS no end.”

Raucous opener ‘Honesty Box’ evokes the bands earlier punk leanings with a memorable refrain, howling confessional yearnings like a Millennial Johnny from Mike Leigh’s 1993 film Naked.

On ‘Minibreak’ the need to escape and chase a sense of joy is explored on this bittersweet track. While on single ‘Tollund man’ explores the awkwardness of adapting to changing social norms and trying to find a place in the new world of online meetings, tik tok videos culturekampf and come out retaining some sense of humanity at the end of it all.

The rockabilly infused ‘Missing Suburbia’, playfully turns the long treaded idea of escape to the city on its head, reflecting a generation yearning familiarity, community and certainty in a world seemingly accelerating into yet higher gears of frightening madness. Closer ‘Highstreet Blues’ is evocative of the tremelo jangle of REM and Television, yet is distinctly British in both character and subject matter.
